Surge problems in piping systems can have devastating effects on production and safety. The consequences of a surge that is not catered for in the design of a system include pipe clashes, support failures, equipment overload and pipe rupture. It is much better to prevent this with accurate analysis than cater for the effects after the event which can be extremely costly, cause injury and damage reputation. The tight integration between CAESAR II and BOSfluids makes this process quick and efficient.

Fiberglass versus steel piping: engineering differences and FRP allowable stress envelopes.

This DRG Webinar will cover differences in the engineering process of steel piping systems versus Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) piping systems. Both types of material have separate (dis)advantages and properties. For GRP the material properties are also different for the hoop and axial direction. This results in different approaches in the applicable design codes and deviating engineering knowledge is demanded. Also FRP failures manifest differently with respect to steel.

The GRP stress allowable values are provided by a stress envelope (hoop versus axial) rather than a fixed value. The different aspects involved to construct the GRP design envelope according ISO14692:2002 will be provided. Construction of design envelopes for GRP piping often leads to confusion. This is caused by fundamental differences in the piping properties with respect to steel and the different methods provided in codes.

For example, in contrast to the DIN code the ISO code does not apply a constant factor (x6) to obtain the long term envelope from the short term envelope obtained from burst tests. However, it used long term regression testing and qualification to obtain the GRP design envelope. This DRG Webinar will cover both theoretical backgrounds and practical issues related to projects performed by DRG in the past.
